PGI: CANTRINA: ITS FIRST TWENTY YEARS - Ioeilvino

We have known Cristina Inganni for many years, practically since the beginning of her adventure in the world of wine; she had been introduced to us by a producer friend in Lugana and so we were able to taste her wines several times over the years. Later we also met Diego Lavo, who later became co-owner of the Cantrina winery. Cantrina is a small hamlet in the municipality of Bedizzole. It was here in 1999 that Cristina Inganni decided to carry on the dream of her husband Dario Dattoli, a Brescian restaurateur who had died in an accident the year before, and who was passionate about French wines, and had planted some ten years earlier some vineyards for the production of wines to be consumed in his own premises. Diego Lavo, who ran a company specialising in planting vineyards, came to her aid in this venture. Thus were born the first three wines, marketed from the 1999 vintage. Over the years, the area under vines has increased; there are now eight hectares under vine, divided into three different plots, for a production of around 40 thousand bottles, divided into eight different labels. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the winery, three vertical tastings of the first wines produced by the company were offered, from the first vintage, i.e. 1999, to those currently on the market. The three wines, which have seen considerable changes in their elaboration over the years, are: Igt Benaco Bresciano Bianco “Rinè”; Igt Benaco Bresciano Rosso “Nepomuceno” and Vino Bianco Passito “Sole di Dario”. From stage sets to barriques. The unique wines “designed” by Cristina - Corriere della Sera

The first steps saw interpreters not of local grapes but of international vines: merlot, pinot noir, chardonnay, semillon. With the terroir to make them unique, different from those produced elsewhere, and this obligatory choice, here as much an oxymoron as it is intriguing, will prove to be propaedeutic for the current evolution of Cantrina wines. Over the years, Nepomuceno, the winery's most awarded and best known product, will see rebo and marzemino grapes appear alongside merlot, playing more on elegance than on power.

Cantrina, the groppello made in Bedizzole has conquered the Big Apple - Giornale di Brescia

“Is it possible with just 30,000 bottles a year of wine born in Bedizzole, and what's more the Brescian but very unknown Groppello, to manage to slip into the Big Apple's most exclusive artistic circles? Cristina Inganni, who runs the Cantrina winery in Bedizzole with her husband Diego Lavo, says yes. On 4 March, in fact, in New York Cantrina was the sponsor of an event at Issue Project Room, a space totally dedicated to artists. The birthday of Elliott Sharp, composer and guitar virtuoso, was also celebrated in Brooklyn. On this occasion, actor Steve Buscemi was the host.”

The Cantrina is a small winery, now run by Cristina together with another super-enthusiast, Diego Lavo: just under 6 hectares of land, on two plots, about 20,000 bottles produced, but tenacious work that has involved, with many trials and experiments, even reckless ones, something like 33,000 vine stocks, initially “favouring international varieties and now rediscovering, in part, some local vines”. An estate where trying new ways is standard practice, as the owner likes to remind us when she observes that “the wines convey the character of the territory of origin and of the people who make them; from these elements, thanks also to my past experiences linked to an artistic training, I wanted to give our wines an absolutely creative and consequently unique imprint.
