Cantrina makes it three at the “Merlot d'Italia” - Brescia Oggi

Cantrina triumphs again in Aldeno and opens the door to the «autochthonous»: the winery from Bedizzole, managed by Cristina Inganni with her husband Diego Lavo, won for the third consecutive time the title of «best IGT label of previous vintages» at the Mostra dei Merlot d'Italia in Aldeno (Tn), an increasingly prestigious event dedicated exclusively to this prestigious grape variety. The award went to «Nepomuceno 2004», the flagship label of this small winery that for years has been distinguishing itself for a very special approach to the viticulture of the area, focused above all on the nuances and characteristics that the unique terroir of the Valtenesi can offer to the «repertoire» of great international wines. From volcanoes to glacial moraine with Nepomuceno, Merlot IGT Benaco Bresciano 2003 from the Cantrina winery in Bedizzole (Brescia) where only international grape varieties are cultivated. Diego Lavo, owner with his wife Cristina Inganni, emphasised the importance of precisely this type of soil squeezed between fluvial and glacial deposits that characterises their Merlot. The vintage was perfect because an unexpected hailstorm in June had destroyed the 70% of grapes. This forced thinning, which we, lucidly, would never have had the courage to do, allowed the grapes to ripen excellently, rich in glycerine and alcohol

With the success obtained with the Benaco Bresciano Nepomuceno 2003, in particular, the Cantrina winery has repeated the prestigious result already achieved two years ago with the wine from the 2001 harvest. Lombardy, and in particular the Garda area, is therefore among the most suitable areas for Merlot, and Cantrina proves this. “From the outset,” said Cristina Inganni of the Cantrina winery, "we have been oriented towards the production of medium and long ageing wines based on international wines. The choice may appear counter to the Gardesana tradition, but we believe that this can be a personal opportunity to express the idea of territory, of terroir, given that the same grape variety offers extremely different results in situations that are geographically and culturally distant".
