Perfumes
posted on 22 May 2014Spring is in its prime and I like to give you a little glimpse of the vineyard at this season. As you can see from the photographs, the vines are already in full bloom and, something that we in the industry take somewhat for granted, I wonder how many people have ever noticed the rare beauty of the flowering vines and thus paused to admire them.
During the development process of a grape cluster, I consider flowering to be one of the most delicate yet fascinating moments. You would never guess that those tiny, fragrant flowers will one day become those juicy grapes from which a noble product such as wine is made.
But the scent, the perfume... if you ever have the chance to walk in a vineyard at this time of year, take a deep breath, approach its flowers and you will smell what for me is one of the most wonderful scents. A faint perfume, a little wild, at the same time gentle, but so intense and long that it lingers, it lingers, it enters your nostrils and goes to your head, it hits you in the heart.
