PGI: CANTRINA: ITS FIRST TWENTY YEARS - Ioeilvino

We have known Cristina Inganni for many years, practically since the beginning of her adventure in the world of wine; she had been introduced to us by a producer friend in Lugana and so we were able to taste her wines several times over the years. Later we also met Diego Lavo, who later became co-owner of the Cantrina winery. Cantrina is a small hamlet in the municipality of Bedizzole. It was here in 1999 that Cristina Inganni decided to carry on the dream of her husband Dario Dattoli, a Brescian restaurateur who had died in an accident the year before, and who was passionate about French wines, and had planted some ten years earlier some vineyards for the production of wines to be consumed in his own premises. Diego Lavo, who ran a company specialising in planting vineyards, came to her aid in this venture. Thus were born the first three wines, marketed from the 1999 vintage. Over the years, the area under vines has increased; there are now eight hectares under vine, divided into three different plots, for a production of around 40 thousand bottles, divided into eight different labels. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the winery, three vertical tastings of the first wines produced by the company were offered, from the first vintage, i.e. 1999, to those currently on the market. The three wines, which have seen considerable changes in their elaboration over the years, are: Igt Benaco Bresciano Bianco “Rinè”; Igt Benaco Bresciano Rosso “Nepomuceno” and Vino Bianco Passito “Sole di Dario”. THE STYLE OF AN ENTREPRENEUR IN THE WINE INDUSTRY, WHO DOES NOT FOLLOW THE RULES OF THE MARKET, BUT PRODUCES WHAT SHE LIKES BEST, RELYING ON HER OWN ABILITIES. It is easy to fall into banality or rhetoric. A woman entrepreneur, a woman who “makes” wine, and give rise to a whole series of clichés, even if ennobled by the best of intentions. The antidote, however, is just as easy to find: it is enough to listen to Cristina Inganni as she talks about her projects, so that one focuses on the substance, forgetting formalism. In a phase of Italian viticulture in which the search for indigenous grape varieties is almost exploding, her choices seem, at first glance, to go against the tide: she achieves great results with Sauvignon, Semillon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling ... But the answer is immediate: “In my opinion, it is easier to identify the “terroir”, the identity of the territory, in international vines,“ as happens with people who come from distant countries to places that, little by little, transform them, adding, modifying traits and ways until they become something unique, hybrids charged with a singular charm. And consideration does not clash with typicality, indeed “native vines are a heritage, a heritage to be protected”, but it is from confrontation, from the plurality of choices that we can enrich the world of wine.

And the Brescians? Few but they were there and they did not disfigure at all. The rather scattered presentation of wines did not allow us to find them all. Presenting their products, however, were Cristina Inganni with her award-winning Nepomuceno and Giovanna Prandini with the brand new Leonatus. Both are pure Merlot. Fratelli Berlucchi, represented by oenologist Casare Ferrari, was there with Casa delle colonne (where the Cabernet is only Franc), but next to it we found a Deressi from Majolini that has boundless elegance and a Nero d'Ombra from Mirabella that is just as elegant, but far too austere. The wineries produce very little of it and therefore speak little of it. A little more is Barone Pizzini's San Carlo while again very little is San Giovanni's Cabernet Montezalto.

Cantrina triumphs again at Aldeno and opens up to the «autochthonous»: the Bedizzole winery, managed by Cristina Inganni with her husband Diego Lavo, won for the third consecutive time the title of «best IGT label of previous vintages» at the Mostra dei Merlot d'Italia in Aldeno (Tn), an increasingly prestigious event dedicated exclusively to this prestigious grape variety. The award went to «Nepomuceno 2004», the flagship label of this small winery that for years has been distinguishing itself for a very special approach to the viticulture of the area, focused above all on the nuances and characteristics that the unique Valtenesi terroir can offer to the «repertoire» of great international wines.
