April: news from the Vineyards

posted on 4 May 2016
Just two pieces of news about the start of the season...
  1. Field and seasonal trend + organic
After a particularly beautiful and sunny winter, spring broke out with a rapidity that left us not a little surprised. With unusual anticipation, the vines started up again for the new season with unexpected strength thanks to almost summer-like temperatures, and we are now about two weeks ahead of a normal vegetative cycle. At first glance, we seem to be witnessing good, regular budding, with the fruit set expected to be far too abundant for now, but as we know, the season is still long... In the meantime, our path towards organic production continues, and from this year we are trying mechanical tillage of the under-row. We have put an old tool that had lain forgotten for years back in the field, and although this implies a greater burden of work, we think it will certainly benefit the vines.
  1. Bottling
We will soon bottle the Valtènesi 2015, our Groppello 100%, and let's face it, 2015 was indeed a very good year for this wine in particular, to which we are affectionately attached. For the first time, in fact, we are able to bottle wine from Groppello grapes grown entirely by us in the vineyard we rented last year and in the new vineyard planted in 2013, and we are convinced that this can be felt in the glass. In July it will be the turn of the Rinè 2015, now a constant in terms of product quality and identity, and the Nepomuk 2012 with which we are continuing on our path towards an increasingly austere and integral wine, perhaps little prone to market “mushyness”.
  1. Information on opening the cellar to the public and appointment notice
We would like to remind you that for those wishing to taste the products in the cellar or make purchases, it is always best to give notice of your arrival by phone or e-mail. Saturday is the day we devote the most time to these meetings, but it is always better to let us know.
  1. Upcoming events
Italia in rosa, from 10 to 12 June from 17:00 to 23:00 at the Moniga del Garda Castle, where it will be possible to taste the Rosanoire 2015. Cristina and Diego

Ready for the new season!

posted on 20 March 2025
With spring at the doors, we’re happy to send you some brief news items about what’s going on at Cantrina. It’s certainly no longer novel, but we’ve had the umpteenth mild winter, an aspect of climate change that we have been seeing for years now. This year, though, conditions were unusually wet and tedious, with drizzles in autumn that lasted for months. They didn’t harm the health of the vines, but conditions were certainly unpleasant for those in the vineyards doing the winter pruning. In a few days, finally, after two years, we will complete planting our new vineyard, on land we recently bought. We are anxiously expecting the initial crop—in harvest 2025--from the first vines planted in 2023.

Story of a season

It’s been quite some time since our last newsletter, since we’ve had so many things to do. Plus the fact that this growing year, just concluded with our 2024 harvest, was certainly not among our easiest, particularly for those like us, who have chosen to farm organically. The months have sped by, and here we are just now finding the time to catch you up on what we’ve been doing.

Harvest 2023

It was a year of very hard work. Bad weather dealt us repeated blows, first with heavy rains all the way through the spring and a good part of the summer, then with torrid heat in late July and early August. Nonetheless, we were successful in bringing a satisfactory crop into the cellar, both in quantity and quality.
