Trip to the USA…

After two years of working closely with Sussex Wine Merchants, I finally flew to New York to personally meet their team. I found them very accommodating and ultra-efficient, and they planned and helped me with every stop on my itinerary. Christopher and Elan took me to Manhattan, then to Moore Brothers' first wine shop in Brooklyn, then to the other Moore Brothers’ shops in New Jersey and Delaware, all equally impressive. And we ended up with Yves in Atlantic City. I want to warmly thank the entire staff of Moore Brothers for the wonderful hospitality they showed me in all their shops; I was so impressed by their extraordinary professionalism and by the great enthusiasm they show in communicating the world of wine and in introducing their producers’ wines. I truly appreciated how effectively and sincerely they represented and conveyed my own winemaking philosophy. Many thanks to Greg, Dave, and Frank for the great sensitivity and openness they showed me. I feel fortunate indeed to be part of Moore Brothers Wine Choice, together with my winemaking friends of Bele Casel, Paola and Luca

Groppello 2015

In exercising my profession, I’ve been “treading the vineyards” for a good thirty years now, more or less, and I never expected to find such utterly fantastic Groppello! Totally unexpected, because Groppello, planted over hardly more than 400 hectares, exclusively on the Brescian side of Lago di Garda, is a challenging grape to grow. Its tight-packed cluster of “knotted-up” (groppello) berries; thin skin, with often little pigment; its hard-to-achieve balance of sugar and acidity—all these mean that even in good growing years the grapes struggle to ripen adequately, and suffer attacks of mould well before the harvest arrives.

A day of bottling in Cantrina

It was a long, hot and busy day: we bottled and packed more than 17,000 bottles - a record for our small company - between our own wines and those on consignment for other companies. Bottling is the last stage in the wine production process and is a very delicate moment, in which nothing must be left to chance, as months (and sometimes years) of waiting and work could be wasted by a simple lack or carelessness.

Here we go again: cut the weeds, sucker, select and thin the buds, train the shoots on the wires… The season hasn’t even started yet and we’re already behind with our work in the vineyards, and from here until harvest we’ll be running back and forth to keep the vineyards in good condition.
