Cantrina's Valtènesi. Garda wine restarts - Eco di Bergamo

(...) While claiming the originality of its «free exercise in style», which derives from the choices made at the time of its birth about a quarter of a century ago, Cantrina di Bedizzole also believed in the birth of Valtènesi before and now believes in this proposed change. It is not for nothing that the company's vineyard holdings have been expanded with a couple of hectares of Groppello to be dedicated to the production of Valtènesi Rosso. This is proof of the intentions of Cristina Inganni and Diego Lavo, a couple committed between vineyard and cellar to producing wines that respect their origins and are in harmony with the environment. From Cantrina, which is also the name of the hamlet of Bedizzole (reached by a short diversions from the highway leading from Brescia to Salò) that hosts the vineyards and cellar, the lake is not visible, but the effect on the climate can be felt: and how! From the organically cultivated vineyards (from the 2017 harvest, the wines will be able to avail themselves of the appropriate certification) come half a dozen labels of remarkable quality. This is especially evident in the wines from not particularly successful vintages, such as 2014. (...)

Second participation and second victory: Nepomuceno from Cantrina, a small winery run by Cristina Inganni with her husband Diego Lavo in Bedizzole, in the Brescian hinterland of Lake Garda, has once again asserted itself in the competition of the greatest Merlots of Italy. With the success obtained with the Benaco Bresciano Nepomuceno 2003 at the fifth edition of the national exhibition of the Merlot d'Italia of Aldeno, in the Province of Trento,Cantrina has repeated the prestigious result already obtained two years ago with the 2001 vintage, imposing itself in the category of Merlot Igt of the vintages prior to 2005.

From volcanoes to glacial moraine with Nepomuceno, Merlot IGT Benaco Bresciano 2003 from the Cantrina winery in Bedizzole (Brescia) where only international grape varieties are cultivated. Diego Lavo, owner with his wife Cristina Inganni, emphasised the importance of precisely this type of soil squeezed between fluvial and glacial deposits that characterises their Merlot. The vintage was perfect because an unexpected hailstorm in June had destroyed the 70% of grapes. This forced thinning, which we, lucidly, would never have had the courage to do, allowed the grapes to ripen excellently, rich in glycerine and alcohol

Raise your glasses to Merlot - Lombardy on the table

With the success obtained with the Benaco Bresciano Nepomuceno 2003, in particular, the Cantrina winery has repeated the prestigious result already achieved two years ago with the wine from the 2001 harvest. Lombardy, and in particular the Garda area, is therefore among the most suitable areas for Merlot, and Cantrina proves this. “From the outset,” said Cristina Inganni of the Cantrina winery, "we have been oriented towards the production of medium and long ageing wines based on international wines. The choice may appear counter to the Gardesana tradition, but we believe that this can be a personal opportunity to express the idea of territory, of terroir, given that the same grape variety offers extremely different results in situations that are geographically and culturally distant".
